The Pulse of Entertainment: David Willner, New Vice President/General Manager of Radio One Baltimore, Looks
to Meet Listeners Where They Are
by Dr. Eunice Moseley
(March 3, 2026) - "We (broadcast radio) are not dead at all,"
said the new Vice President/General Manager for Radio One Baltimore (part of Urban One) David
Willner, formerly Director of Sales. "80% of all Americans still listen to radio...drive time...for local connections
and their favorite DJ. We used to be the only place...there are other options now...but radio is still king of the car!"
Dave Willner
made his new move when former VP/GM Howard Mazer retired. Howard was a maverick in driving radio sales and listenership. Famous
for his community outreach. During his tenure Radio One's stations, in particular 92Q Jams (WERQ-FM 92.3), were always on
the streets holding and hosting events and supporting charitable community services. Today, everyone is online, which is how
Willner is approaching the industry. Urban One Baltimore even has their own streaming station One Digital (YouTube, BBC Radio
1, TuneIn and iHeartRadio). Other Radio One Baltimore stations include Magic (WWIN-FM 102.3 & 92.7), Praise (WPRS-FM 104.1),
Spirit (1400AM) and The Beat (WOLB -AM 1010).
"When cable first started people said it was going to be the death of ABC, NBC,
etc... It became just another source," Willner pointed out when I asked. "It is the same in audio. We have to expand
our reach through different platforms. Go where our audience is to connect to them."
For that David said he needs people familiar with those locations (social media).
"We need more...media salespeople
with a marketing and media background," he said. "My pet-peeve with universities... the business side (sales) is
not being taught."

Dave Willner
met Howard Mazer in college, and they both started working at B104. Howard joined Radio One Baltimore in sales in 1992. When
he became head of sales he brought on Dave who was still working at B104. So, Dave made the move and joined Radio One Baltimore
in 1999 as an account executive. By 2000 he was in management at Radio One Baltimore as its National Sales Manager. In 2005
he was promoted to Director of Sales.
"It's been 27 years," David
points out as we discussed his career at Radio One. "I was waiting for a management position...Howard and I go way back.
We both worked at B104. I believe in him...I've been following him for almost 30 years."
David Willner explained the history
of Radio One Baltimore as I talked about Cathy Hughes being my first contact. I first interviewed her because of the milestones
at Radio One. She in turn supported the events I coordinated. Howard Mazer continued that support as is David Willner. I have
been working with Radio One Baltimore since Cathy Hughes came to Baltimore.
"At that time...they were in Washinton,
DC, then Baltimore, then Philly...lots of growth," he pointed out.
Radio One, now under the umbrella of Urban One,
has 70 radio stations worldwide.
"We stream too," David said as we talked
about streaming channels like Spotify. "Radio One has multiple audio channels - terrestrial and streaming."
"I came
to Radio One in my late 30s," he said. "I was working in radio since my 20s straight out of college. I went to Towson...then
B104 (JCorp). It was a Top 40 station, #1 at the time. I worked in lots of jobs (promotions, traffic, on-air). Made my way
to the sales department at B104. I wanted to move up and there was no more moving up. I wanted to get into management."
That is when
Howard Mazer made David a promise, come work in sales here and work your way up to management. I made a similar deal with
the publisher of The Baltimore Times. I wanted to be a journalist and they wanted salespeople. I was told to work in sales,
and I could be journalist also. So, as I worked in sales, I was also a feature story writer.
"In Baltimore, we are the only
urban station in a market that is 30% African-American," David Willner points out. "On one side we are the only
one reaching this audience and demographics. The other side is we can't do everything...we get hammered with requests."
It's those
requests and the other audio options available to his listeners that are the driving force for David Willner in his new role
as Vice President/General Manager. To increase listeners and sales by meeting people where they are - in their car, online
streaming and on the many social media platforms. www.Urban1.com www.92Q.com www.MagicBaltimore.com www.PraiseBaltimore.com www.MyBaltimoreSpirit.com www.WOLBBaltimore.com
